Nick Clegg MP recently visited Enfield Citizens Advice Bureaux and discussed issues of debt affecting middle income families. Debt levels have been rising successively over the last 6 years and whilst the average level of debt in 2002 was about £8,000, it is not now unusual to find individuals with (on average), a £20K of debt. This does not include mortgage debts and payments to be made. Increasingly, housing associations and Home Ownership organisations are realising that sooner or later, individuals are going to default on payments as living costs are also rapidly rising. The Department for Communities and Local Government is also considering funding country court advice projects and has been in consultation with Citizens Advice on this matter. Let us hope that help comes sooner rather than later so that people do not have to suffer the trauma of having to worry endlessly about how to meet basic living costs.
